Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning

At Wilmot Elementary, we believe our students should learn social emotional skills alongside academic skills. We use the Second Step curriculum to teach these skills. This universal, classroom-based curriculum uses developmentally appropriate best practices to guide students in developing and practicing their ability to self-regulate, recognize and manage their emotions, problem solve, and increase their social communication skills. Extensive research shows a high correlation between the systemic teaching of social emotional skills and increasing levels of academic achievement and assessment scores. In addition to the instruction provided to all students at school, HomeLinks are provided so families know what is being taught and how to reinforce these concepts and skills at home.

Working with kids and learning about their strengths and their passions is why Liz loves being a Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SEL).  Everyday her bucket is filled with the warmest, kindest welcome built from the relationships she fosters with her students. Liz grew up in Pennsylvania and went to College at University of Delaware and received her master’s degree at Kutztown University.  She moved to upstate New York, then to New Hampshire, then Montana, back to PA and finally settled down in Colorado! Together with her husband they have two girls and love living the Colorado outdoorsy lifestyle. Liz has an open door policy and is here to help make this year awesome for the Wilmot families!
