5 Staff Development Days Added to the School Calendar

October 7, 2020

Wonderful Wilmot Parents,

Like many other things since the pandemic started, teaching and learning requires new skill sets. Teachers and students are navigating the new structures and protocols for in-person and remote learning. For the 2020-2021 school year, all learning is expected to be facilitated through learning management systems (Seesaw, Google, Schoology). Teachers are teaching differently, and students are learning differently. The changing nature of learning has created new and different responsibilities and expectations of educators, especially teachers. Our teachers, with the help and support of our families, are doing an amazing job of supporting student learning and managing these new responsibilities.

We’ve been monitoring the teaching and learning environments since September 8th when in-person learning began. As a system, we have come to the conclusion that student learning will be enhanced with additional time for elementary teachers to plan for instruction and engage in training focused on the learning management tools. We believe this will ensure our teachers are better prepared to meet the needs of students in a variety of different learning environments and provide our students with the best education possible.

To create this additional time for teachers, December 21, 22; January 29, February 26 and March 26 will be designated as non-student contact days. This change will allow teachers to have more quality planning time for instruction, collaborative work in professional learning communities (PLCs), and opportunities to increase their skills to serve students in our current situation. Please mark your calendars for these days.

Going back to school this fall has required schools and families to work together even more than before. We greatly appreciate the support and understanding our families have given to us.
